Looking at my calendar this morning I realized it is just five weeks until G.O.B.A. It is all beginning to come together. Yes, I will be physically ready. Yes, the weather is coming around. Yes, we'll be gypsies on bikes for a week.
The Great Ohio Bike Adventure (or G.O.B.A.), is a bicycle adventure with 2,500 to 2,900 other adventuresome cyclists. This epic event happens just once a year. This year it will be starting in Mansfield, Ohio.
Why gypsies? That was my observation several years ago. Five reasons:
1. Colorful - Like gypsies, this vast group is quite colorful in dress and personalities. The colorful dress is helpful for road safety. The personalities just come out with the carefree-fun nature.
2. Nomadic lifestyle - We move from one town to the next each day, bringing along just enough possessions to be able to carry in a bag and throw on a truck. Just the basics! Makes life a lot simpler.
3. Fun loving nature - We'll be surrounded be other folks that love to bike,
enjoy the outdoors, and are up for adventure.
Along the way you might see 50 bikes at an ice cream stand, or everyone participating at a little town celebration with dancing in the street. On the last night there is even a song contest in which the bikers submit lyrics to a song they have written about G.O.B.A. and perform in front of the masses, including hundreds of town residents. This year the event is in Bucyrus, OH.
This event isn't for everyone. You need to be able to adjust to the weather. My very first G.O.B.A. night years ago was so cold I had to put on every article of clothing I had with me to try to keep warm in my little tent. Or, it can be so hot that you hit the road @ 6 am to have 50 miles done by 1 pm. I know it sounds crazy, but I can't wait for G.O.B.A. again this year. Why? Because I can! What's your challenge?
